Supermarine spitfire Technical Illustration
The supermarine spitfire was a British air superiority fighter of the 2nd world war Designed by R.J Mitchell. It had its origins in the supermarine S.6 which itself was developed to compete for the schneider trophy in the late 1920s. Intense competition between the british, french, american and german competitors did much to advance aerodynamics and engine design in the inter war period the results of which can be seen in the best fighters of the war the spitfire being one.The similar hawker hurricane was actually more numerous than the spitfire during the battle of britain though the spitfire's iconic shape and legendary reputation secured its place in history as the Aircraft that saved Great Britain.
